In Thessaly, in the city of Kalabaka, imposing stone cliffs have been rising for centuries. The well-known Meteora a interrupting the monotony of the vast Thessalian plain. They were called “Meteora” because they give the impression of floating between the sky and the earth. In the 14th century, ascetics began to build the first monasteries on the treacherous peaks of the imposing rocks. Today, of the 20 monasteries, only 6 remain. But after Mount Athos, they form the largest and continuously present monastic complex in Greece.
