The Jews, people of “immigration”, will settle in Thessaloniki as early as the Roman years. Their presence will become even more intense in the 15th century with the arrival of the Sephardim. The Jewish quarters that formed in the city radically changed its physiognomy and the Jewish population significantly influenced its identity. We walk through neighborhoods and learn about the lifestyle, habits and customs, religion, professional activity of the city’s Jews.
The Jewish presence in Thessaloniki will be marked by World War II. Their persecution by the Germans, the destruction of the Jewish cemetery and places connected with the Holocaust have many stories to tell us. The Jewish Museum completes the route by offering us information and material valuable for the reconstruction of the history (entrance to the museum upon request).
